News From "Eye on Sports Media" Blog
Here are some recent postings from my
other blog ("Eye
on Sports Media"). I just
found it hard to get excited today about IBM's purchase of Cognos. I will
ahve to give that some attention later.

What
The TV Cameras Do Not Show You
When the University of Georgia
Bulldogs came running onto the field dressed in black this past Saturday,
the cameras of CBS Sports were there to show you the burst of energy and
the excitement of the fans. These images are also taken by the print and
online media to show the world. What they do not show is the silent entry
of the injured players on the other side of the field, or how these players
who so want to be in the game often stand aside idle.
Verne
Lundquist: "It's Lingerie on the Field"
For the most part, play-by-play
announcers are masters at waxing poetically in their descriptions of plays
during a game, or about an event itself. The first ones that come to mind
for me are Vin Scully and Keith Jackson. There are other
times, however, when they say something that makes you scratch your head
and say "huh?". There was Mike Patrick asking what
Britney Spears was doing with her life
during an overtime game earlier this year between the University of
Georgia (UGA) and the University of Alabama. Yesterday evening,
Verne Lundquist of CBS Sports gave us one of those moments.
Why
is ESPN Gameday Going to Division III Game?
The boys in the the power conferences
are unhappy with ESPN this weekend. Instead of coming to one of the Big
Ten or SEC Conference games, the ESPN GameDay crew is headed to
Williams College for the 122nd meeting between Williams and
Amherst Colleges, the longest rivalry in Division III. Why in the
world would ESPN pick this as a site instead of Athens, Georgia, where
Auburn and the University of Georgia will meet for only the 111th time?
ESPN's
Cowherd: "I Get Paid to Be Hated"
ESPN Radio allowed Colin Cowherd
to travel to Athens today for a live broadcast of his radio show "The
Herd with Colin Cowherd".
Cowherd can be controversial and is not very well liked in the blogosphere.
But he loves that. "How many jobs are out there that you are paid
to be hated, and you love your job?" Cowherd said in response to my
question if he still hated bloggers. He continued on by saying that "all
bloggers do is write stuff that drives traffic to my web site and listeners
to my show. My advertisers love it, so I am thankful so may people hate
me."
The
"Science" of Picking Up College Football Games...
With the expanded number of broadcasters covering college football across
the country, fans are sometimes left scratching their heads trying to figure
out how games are allocated to the different networks for broadcast. For
fans of the 22nd-ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats and the 10th-ranked
University of Georgia Bulldogs, there is confusion on why their November
17th matchup is being broadcast by Lincoln Financial Sports, and not by
CBS Sports or ESPN.
