I Would Like To Attend Today's IBM Executive Briefing on Web 2.0
I received an invitation to today's
IBM Executive Briefing
for Bloggers on Web 2.0. I would
love to be able to dial in and listen. Unfortunately there is one small
problem. I am not near a land line. I would use Skype, but IBM's conference
line numbers (toll or toll free) are "forbidden" through Skype.
This is the error message I always get:
and the official reason given on the Skype web site is:
Skype tells me the number I am trying to call is forbidden, why is that?
Unfortunately Skype does not support calls to all number ranges in every
country. There are a select number of premium priced or geographic/country
specific numbers which are forbidden and cannot be reached using SkypeOut
at this time. If the number you are calling is not supported we apologize
for that and suggest that you use a different method to call that number.
Has anyone else encountered this before,
and how have you worked around it? What I have done in the past is call
someone else on Skype and had them patch me in. This is not the most efficient
method in the era of Web 2.0, is it?

Try calling the non-US numbers via Skype - they usually work, and will probably not cost you too much to use.
The toll-free UK number for today's call is +44 808-234-1969.
Let me know how you get on...

Yes, they cannot back bill properly to 800,877 and 888 numbers so they are not allowed. If you pay per minute or have the unlimited package you still cannot dial those prefixes. Remember, the company that runs the conference solution gets billed when you dial the 800.
But I always ask for a local type number also

Unfortunately, the same error occurs when I dial the 770 number they provided as well...

Interesting. I used Skype to call an 866 number just a couple of nights ago. Worked like a charm.
