Oh The Unbridled Joy of College Sports
The Empire State Building was bathed
in scarlet lights. Times Square was lit up with screens touting the big
game. And over in Piscataway, New Jersey, perennial Big East football patsy
Rutgers University was playing the biggest game in school history, taking
their 8-0 record against Number 3 and undefeated Louisville. Louisville
was positioned to play for the BCS Championship. Until last night. I admit
that I was one who turned the channel when the score got to be 25-7 in
favour of Louisville. Actually, I had no choice as SWMBO took over the
controls for the television (that would be the telly for those across the
pond). But I got back in time to see Rutgers pull off the stunning upset
28-25. The pure, unbridled joy of the students was wonderful to watch as
a sea of scarlet covered the field after the game.
It is unlikely that the Scarlet Knights
will take on the Scarlet and Grey of The Ohio State University in the BCS
Championship game (assuming the Buckeyes beat Michigan in just over a week).
But for now, Rutgers is the Beast of the East, and there is no joy in Louisville
today.
