Permalink My Word of the Day: Just Me And My "Poxy" Website

Being a Colonial and not having a firm grasp of the Queen's English, I did not know exactly what this word meant when someone on an IT Governance Listerv used the word "Poxy" to describe my blog. But I did know it was not a compliment so Iooked it up and this is the definition I got from the dictionary at Freesearch:

Poxy
adjective UK INFORMAL
having little value, importance or influence:
"Just because you posted it on your poxy web site does not give it any more credibility."

Yes, that sample sentence is what that individual said in response to my follow-up post on the Google Desktop Search tool concerns that I have been writing about. Well yes, I do write content for this blog to have value, but I have never deluded myself to think that I am designing it to be important or influential, so maybe he was right on 2 of the 3 meanings. This individual also said

"I have no problem with you quoting my words verbatim on your web site, but you have to at least give me some sort of credit. The fact remains that the Google desktop does nothing more than it claims to do. If you can not handle it, just don't install it. You make the claim that "Google Desktop Search Engine May Carry Undocumented Risks So Be Wary", well I can not dispute that because I have no access to the source, but unless you have any hypothesis on how the software could be abused then your assertions are pointless."

So Mr. Gerard J. Nicol of TapeTrack, I thank you for pushing back at my assertions and challenging me because that is what discussion is supposed to be. But please, in the future, attack the position not the person. As I told him in my response, I posted here and on the ListServ because they are two diferent audiences, not because I wanted add credibility to what I was writing. I did not include his name in my post because I did not want the tresponse to seem personal.

C'est las vie.

Fighting Fud

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) are too often used as marketing tools. And too many mainstream publications are citing reports that have no validity. So if you know anybody who is citing these publications and reports to make business decisions, please point them to one or more of these links. You can also point them to the "Fighting FUD" index of stories and/or add the "Fighting FUD" graphic link to your web site.
